Reduce Your Carbon Emissions

Help Save the Environment
Are you concerned with how high your carbon emissions are? Follow these common tips for reducing your carbon footprint:
  • Turn off your lights whenever you leave a room, even if it is for a short period of time.
  • Unplug your electronics when not in use (including your computer). Most electronics still use some energy even when turned off.
  • Set your thermostat two degrees cooler in the winter and two degrees warmer in the summer.
  • Clean or replace your air filters on your air conditioner at least once a month.
  • Replace any incandescent light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) or Light-Emitting Diodes (LED).
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Use dishwashers instead of washing your dishes by hand. Generally, dishwashers use less hot water than washing by hand.
  • Put a liter bottle filled with water in the tank of your toilet to reduce the water in your tank.
  • Use low-flow showerheads in your showers and faucet aerators in your sinks to conserve water.
  • Start a compost pile for grass clippings, leaves, vegetable peelings, fruit rinds, and barnyard animal manure.
  • Recycle! Recycling allows some materials to be reused and prevents other hazardous materials from contaminating our soil.
  • Use recycled paper and recycle printer cartridges. Only print when necessary and print on both sides of the paper.
  • Carpool to work and for personal trips. Consider walking, biking, or using mass transportation as an alternative. Reduce the number of trips you take by habit.
  • Drive during non-peak hours. Turn your car off when you are just idling.
  • Consider purchasing a hybrid or more efficient car if you drive frequently. Use radial tires and keep them properly inflated.
  • Buy local products when possible to reduce the number of products that are transported long distances.
