There have been many changes to the Garbage / Recycle Collection in St. Francis.

The City vendor for collection of garbage and recycle is now Johns Disposal Service.

Resident Letter

The Yard Waste Recycle Center is located at 2125 East Bolivar Ave.  
This is a self-help facility.  Accommodations for disabled persons are available. 

**Proof of Residency Required**

The Recycle center accepts yard waste.  Tires, motor oil & vehicle batteries are collected by Johns Disposal Service.  Call Johns directly for information: (262) 473-4700.

Please Note: Branches should be left as long as possible.  Do not mix grass, leaves, twigs, branches - they are stored separately.  Containers must weigh less than 50 pounds.  

Sod or sod/soil mix, is not yard waste, and may be collected with bulk pick up.

Clean-Up & Garbage Rules:
  • Alley/curb Service:  Brown garbage containers shall be placed for collection at ground level on your property (not in the street) as accessible as possible to the alley or curb line.  Containers may not be placed more than 24 hours prior to collection and shall be removed within 12 hours after collection.  Materials must be out by 6:00 AM on collection day or collection cannot be guaranteed.  Only Johns Disposal Service issued brown garbage carts will be collected. Garbage is collected every week (Map of Collection Days).  The contractor the City uses is Johns Disposal Service.

Summary of materials to be collected by the contractor:

  • Garbage (refuse/rubbish/trash) must be properly wrapped and deposited in the brown Johns Disposal Service - no loose garbage.  The weight limit is 60 pounds per bag.  

Bulk Pick Up

Johns Disposal Service will do bulk pick up twice per month, not more than 24 times per year, for each residence.  Residents are to call Johns Disposal Service to schedule bulk pick up.  (262) 473-4700  

See the list below for items approved for bulk pick up.   

  • Additional bagged garbage and/or recycling
  • Automotive batteries
  • Used motor and cooking oil
  • Non-commercial vehicle tires (2 per month, up to 8 annually per residence)
  • Sinks, tubs, toilets (with tank removed)
  • Furniture, chairs, sofas, beds, dressers, etc.
  • Appliances such as refrigerators, washers, and dryers
  • Building materials: lumber (with nails removed or bent down), metal, pipes, etc.
  • Small auto parts (empty of all liquids)
  • Tree stumps, roots, or shrubs with intact root balls (max 60 pounds per item)
  • Water based paint: let paint dry up outdoors, or use absorbent (oil dry, kitty litter, sawdust, etc.) to soak up paint  For oil based paints, call MMSD at (414) 225-2066 or visit their website at www.mmsd.com
  • Carpet: roll tie in lengths of 4 feet or smaller.  Maximum weight of 60 pounds per roll.  Please keep carpet dry.
  • Ashes in paper bags
  • Evergreen trees and wreaths (holiday season)
  • Other oversize items not banned from landfill

Items Banned From Landfill

The following appliances are banned from the landfill
  • air conditioners
  • furnaces
  • dehumidifiers
  • water heaters
  • water softeners
  • dishwashers
  • washers
  • dryers
  • stoves/ovens
  • microwaves
  • freezers and refrigerators

The following electronics are banned from the landfill, but may be collected by Johns Disposal Service by calling for a bulk pick up. One electronic device is considered one bulk pick up.  Two electronic collections are allowed per residence per year:

  • Consumer computers, consumer printers and printer/fax/copier/scanner combinations.
  • Consumer video display devices, including televisions, laptop computer and computer monitors with displays of at least 7" in the longest diagonal direction
  • Computer peripherals
  • Fax machines
  • DVD players, VCR's and other video players (i.e. DVR's)
  • Phones with video displays (i.e. cell phones)

Recycle Collection Rules:

  • Alley/Curb Service: Green recycle bins shall be placed for collection at ground level on your property (not in the street) as accessible as possible to the alley or curb line on the opposite side of the drive approach or parking slab from the garbage placement. The containers should be placed with the lid facing the street. Containers may not be placed more than 24 hours prior to collection and shall be removed within 12 hours after collection. Materials must be out by 6:00 AM on collection day. 
  • Recycle is collected every other week Monday through Friday starting the week of June 29th, 2020  (2020 Recycle Calendar)  


Please recycle the following after rinsing the container clean as necessary:
            Plastic bottles & containers #1-7
            Glass bottles & jars
            Aluminum cans, tin or steel cans, foil & pie tins
            Paperboard from cereal, crackers, snack boxes, etc.
            Paper cardboard from cartons, dairy and juice containers
            Flattened cardboard
            Junk mail
            Phone books
            Magazines, newspapers, office paper
            Brown paper bags

Missed Pick Up

If you believe you have been missed by the regular garbage or recycle collection (which is subject to holiday adjustments) notify Johns Disposal Service at (262) 473-4700.  It can then be determined what action is necessary.

Holiday Collection

For observed holidays, collection is delayed by one day throughout the remainder of the week.

2020 holidays are:
  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • July 4th
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
